Quick answerChoose around the application, stone character, desired carving and finish. Compare physical samples and project conditions rather than treating either material as universally better.

Start with the architectural application

A mandir backdrop, living room relief and exterior surface do not have identical requirements. Tell the stone team where the work will be installed, how it is exposed and what kind of design you want. This allows the conversation to move beyond colour toward a material that suits the whole project.

Look at the stone’s individual character

Natural colour, grain and veining affect the result. Sandstone can offer warm, tactile expressions; marble can bring its own veining and a different quality of light. These are design directions, not guarantees for every stone sold under a family name. Approve the particular selection that will be used.

Review the carving response

The selected stone, blank thickness, relief, cutter access and edge details must work together. A design reference is useful for communicating a motif, but it does not confirm machining feasibility in every material. Discuss the intended scale and depth before finalising a quotation or production drawing.

Make a sample part of the decision

Use a physical sample to review colour, surface finish and the effect of the intended lighting. For a detailed composition, a representative carving sample may be useful. Agree what the sample is approving so a small finish sample is not mistaken for approval of a complete panel layout.

Confirm exposure and maintenance

Water, weather, cleaning access and the surrounding materials influence selection and detailing. Ask for guidance for the actual stone and site. Keep compatible cleaning methods and any specified protection in the handover discussion, rather than assuming that every natural stone behaves the same way.
