Light makes relief legible

A carved wall is experienced through its highlights and shadows as much as its outline. Light close to the surface can reveal texture differently from a more frontal source. The appropriate arrangement depends on the carving, the room and the desired level of contrast.

Study the daylight first

Note the direction of windows and the times when the wall receives direct or reflected light. A design may read differently in morning daylight and in the evening. Share site photographs with the designer so the lighting conversation relates to the actual room rather than an isolated render.

Coordinate light with the carving

Discuss the relief depth and the wall-lighting plan together. A deeply textured surface and a restrained engraved panel may require different treatment. The location of fittings, ceiling details and access for maintenance should be coordinated before the stone design and services are fixed.

Use backlighting only where the assembly supports it

A glow seen in a reference image does not by itself establish a buildable lighting arrangement. Material behaviour, light paths, cavities, wiring and access must be resolved for the proposed assembly. Ask the design team to explain the detail rather than assuming that an opaque carved panel will transmit light.

Use the visualizer as a discussion tool

The Stone Match page includes an illustrative grazing-light visualizer. It can help communicate an intention for shadow and texture, but it does not replace a physical sample, a lighting mock-up or the project’s technical drawings. Confirm the final appearance with the stone and lighting teams.
