Quick answerLarge stone walls are assembled from individual panels. Plan the joints with the artwork, handling, fixing and viewing distance so the composition remains coherent at its actual scale.

A large wall is a panelled installation

A double-height composition can read as one artwork while still being manufactured and installed in separate stone panels. Available stone, transport, handling and the site’s fixing approach all influence the panel layout. The visible joint plan should be discussed before the artwork is released for production.

Scale the composition, not just the image

A motif that works on a small display may need a different distribution of detail on a tall wall. Review the composition from the entrance, the lower floor and the upper landing. Ask how its focal points continue through the height, and where quieter areas allow the architecture to breathe.

Locate joints around important details

Joint positions form part of the design work. Faces and primary focal details need particular care; a seam through an eye or facial profile can disrupt the artwork. A modular geometric wall may use its grid deliberately, while a figurative mural needs a different joint strategy. The right approach depends on the composition rather than a universal grid.

Coordinate the site information early

The wall’s substrate, stone weight, fixing approach and installation access are project-specific matters. Provide elevations, stair profiles, relevant services and site photographs. The responsible design and installation team must resolve these details for the actual wall; a presentation render is not a fixing drawing.

Approve the layout alongside the design

Review the panel drawing and the overall artwork together. Confirm critical dimensions, borders, edge conditions and lighting interfaces. This gives the manufacturer and site team a shared reference and reduces the risk of the carved composition being altered after machining.
